Planting Seeds

Planting Seeds Project:
Believe it or not, my son, eight years old, had a week off from school, which was explained to be a  combination of President's Day and the sad state of budget affairs here in California. After getting over the shock of soooooo many days off from school, we had to think of some ways to help pass the time. My son decided he wanted to plant some seeds! Unfortunately, I didn't have any, so we took a little trip to the store and found some that were inexpensive!

My son decided these were the seeds he wanted to plant.

Thankfully, I had the potting soil, pots and markers on hand! We labeled the plant markers on some colored craft sticks. I put the soil halfway in the pot, and my son dropped the seeds in the pot and than "put a blanket" as he called it, over the seeds.
He was in charge of giving them a good drink of water, and placing the markers in the correct pots.

Here he is with his seeds planted and watered! I just hope he is going to be this happy when it comes time to transplant them into the ground or a larger container!! Although on this day we planted vegetable and flower seeds, I also think some other seeds were planted as well like: "I am important", I am worth spending time with", "My mom trusts me to care for something".

What seed's might you plant with your child/children  today?

"Hi! I'm Adam, nice to meet you"!

Lost Socks!

I love the smell of Dreft Laundry Detergent. Before I was pregnant I would wander over to the laundry soap isle and find myself drawn to the cute pink label and pink cap. I had never been a fan of the baby powder scent, but my husband was right back then when he would tell me "just wait until we have a baby, everything will change." He was right! I love it, now.

Well, I thought I was doing pretty well with this laundry thing. Until tonight, when this happened:
Not one matching sock in the load! They aren't in the dryer, either. Where have the socks gone?

I'm thinking about buying one of these - washable mesh laundry bags -

But, before I do that I'm going to figure out if I can make one. Has anyone ever tried making one? Sewing on mesh scares me a little.

Coming Soon - For the Kids Friday Link Party!

I am SO excited to announce my very own link party, which will officially kick off this Friday, March 4th.  I have loved participating in the various link parties on the web.  What a great way to share all of the wonderful ideas you are all coming up with!  However, I want to put a slightly different spin on this one.

The Fun for Kids Fridays party will be a link party to share ideas, activities and recipes for children.  If it is something that children can make, do, or participate in, even better!  What craft projects, educational activities, family traditions, or ways of simplifying life with kids, have you come up with?

More details to come Friday, so stay tuned!  I am excited to see what you will have to share!

St. Patty's Day Fun

St. Patrick's Day is a very special day in our home.  No, we aren't Irish... but it is the same day that my hubby and I met about 14 years ago.  So we like to find ways to make the day special.  Now that our kids are getting older, it is fun to find ways to make it special for them too.

So here are some of the things we've been up to...

Hanging, Sparkly Shamrocks

We made these shamrocks to hang in the window, which the kids had a lot of fun making.  We followed the directions for the Stained Glue Valentine Hearts found at HolidayCraftsAndCreations.com, HERE.

We used green yarn in place of string, and added lots of green glitter to the top of the glue.  I hung them with fish line.

Just note, it took our shamrocks a couple days to completely dry... and we are in the dry winter here in the Midwest.  So prepare your kids for a long wait to enjoy their creations!

Shamrock Snacks

Aren't these cute?!  I came across the idea in the March 2011 issue of Family Fun Magazine.  I couldn't wait to try these with the kids.  HERE is the link to the FamilyFun.com directions.  However, I've outlined them with photos below :)

Ingredients:
- Pkg of Yogurt Pretzels
- White Chocolate Chips (I used about 1/2 a bag, or 1 cup)
- Green Frosting (I made my own, using a great recipe from Allrecipes.com found HERE)
- Green Sprinkles

Directions:
1)  Place about 1/2 cup of white chocolate chips in a glass dish, and microwave for 30 seconds at about 50% power.  Stir.  Do this two or three times, until you are able to completely melt the chips.  DO NOT OVER HEAT!

You should be able to stir the chocolate smooth and free of lumps.

2)  Line a surface or baking sheet with wax paper.

3)  Dip the bottom half of a pretzel in the melted chocolate, making sure each side is nicely coated.  Place the pretzel onto your wax paper.

4)  Repeat Step 3 with the second and third pretzels, laying each to form the shape of a shamrock.

5)  If you have broken pretzels, you can use them for the stem of your shamrock.  If not, you can carefully cut pretzels like we did below.

 6)  Dip the end of the shamrock stems into the melted chocolate, and put into place on the wax paper.

Here is what your shamrocks will look like when assembled.  Some of them, we chose to lay the stem flat, while others (like this one below) we had placed so that it stood off of the wax paper.

And we thought we'd try to to make some four-leaf clovers while we were at it... of course, right?

7)  Time to mix up some frosting!  I used a great Sugar Cookie Icing recipe from Allrecipes.com, found HERE.  I like this frosting because it sets hard, and is easy to whip up.  I doubled the recipe, and found that I had twice as much frosting as I needed.  So if you use one package of yogurt pretzels, you can expect to follow the recipe as it is written.
Icing Recipe:
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tsp milk
- 2 tsp light corn syrup
- 1/4 tsp almond extract (or vanilla)
- we added green food color

I added it to a piping bag with a small tip, but you could just as easily use a Ziploc bag and cut a small tip off of the corner.

8)  Outline your shamrocks with the icing.  Add your sprinkles soon after, before the frosting begins to set!

And there you have it!  A fun St. Patty's day snack!

We ended up with 18 shamrocks, using all of the pretzels that came in the package.  Not too difficult, and the kids were able to join in.  We give this one a thumbs up!

Garden Reflection

"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" Genesis 1:1

While in my garden on a chilly, yet beautiful sunny California day, I came across one of our fruit trees flowering, and was just amazed at the pure beauty of God's creation! To think that this beautiful flower is going to become a sweet piece of fruit is truly amazing to me!

Sometimes we are so busy living life, that we miss something as simple as a blossoming fruit tree, yet,we are reminded of it's wonderful intelligent design once we slow down, silence ourselves, and take in it's beauty and splendor!

The "artist's" color palette is nothing short of perfect, wouldn't you agree!

Sun Catcher

These are the blue glass fish that I have cut by hand.
Prior to being placed in the kiln. I also fused fish hooks in them.

This is how they look after being baked in the kiln.

I Love these little fish! I will be hanging them by fishing line.

QUICK FIX - Baby room hazard.

Above is a picture of the problem in my sons room. There are three main issues right now. The phone outlet, with sharp corners, chipping paint under the windowsill, and the white extension cord running along the wall.

Our home was built in the 1880's, we are in the process of looking for a new home, but until then I'm looking for quick fixes to these small problems that do not involve shelling out much or ANY money!

Here is what I did:
STEP ONE: Cut a piece of cardboard to fit exactly under the window, covering the three problems.
STEP TWO: Went to the linen closet and found a sheet, this color is perfect for in his room.
STEP THREE: I then covered the cardboard with the sheet. No cutting, no gluing, nothing but a wrinkled thrift store sheet.
STEP FOUR: Place the covered cardboard piece where you need it, I was lucky and was able to put the two sides behind two book shelves we have on either side of the window.

STEP FIVE: Suggestion, add some of your receiving blanket covered pillows (tutorial here: Homespun With Love: 50 Ways to Reuse Receiving Blankets: No Sewing Machine Pillow Cases, Use # 2)

I may end up making another where there isn't a reason for it, but using felt and making some sort of play board for Patrick when he's older, I'll post it if I do!
